Change the whole thing to just be about Charlie Swan and his bromance with Billy Black

‘Of three things I was absolutely positive.

First, Billy descended from wolves.

Second, there was a part of him - and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be - that used me for my TV.

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with the fact he brings me Harry Clearwater’s homemade fish fry.’

Now that would be a book series worth reading!

I think the vampires are meant to have souls. I think that's how SM intended it. It seemed like it was you keep your soul and that she wanted vampires to be held to the same moral standards as humans (until Breaking Dawn, anyway, then idk what the message was supposed to be).

Yeah it’s hard to factor in Breaking Dawn when discussing almost any of the over-arching themes. lol.

Re: Soul question. I think it really depends on whether you think humans have souls and whether souls actually exist. Personally, I do not believe humans have souls, and therefore I do not think vampires would have souls. (It was kinda frustrating when reading the saga with all this automatic assumption that humans had souls, but anyway.) However, if we're going by the books' assumptions, I'd say vampires do have souls. Souls are said to be immortal and based on morality; undoubtedly, yes :)

I’ve asked this before, but we had substantially fewer followers at the time. So let’s do this again.

Based on the context of the books/movies (rather than personal religious belief), do you think Twilight vampires have souls? Y/N

Okay, so I'm in AP Psyc. and we were studying mental disorders. Well, guess what? Bella in NM was the TEXTBOOK PERFECT case of Catatonia Schizophrenia. Um, maybe it's just me(and i know SM) addressed it in NM casually("the doctor threw around words like cataonia.") but it bugs me that SM actually wrote Bella to have a serious mental disorder and she didnt even ever get real help for it. It just magically went away.

I think we were sort of supposed to think her ‘illness’ was supernaturally-induced, like her love for Edward is so true and supernatural and beyond the norm that to have him leave her caused all this and then the minute he returns it’s gone. But if that’s the case she probably should have been careful to steer away from actual medical phenomenon. Because it’s not realistic that Bella never got any help for her depression, supernatural or not. Hearing voices (when you don’t have a mental gift of telepathy) is not okay. And it’s not something that Edward, who has apparently been to medical school twice, should have just dismissed. If he’s so worried about her health and safety, that should have sent up some major red flags.

I would have liked BD if there was an interesting conflict in general, haha. Honestly, i was bored reading it. There was no conflict with her being a vampire or her relationship with Edward or Charlie really. I didnt like the whole Renesmee conflict. i didnt read Twilight to get a story about a perfect child that the second she was born the world revolved around her. I know shes a baby but shes honestly my least favorite character. And i would have liked it if the Volturi's coming would have....

Exactly! It’s like a whole new story rather than an ending to the story of the first three books. Renesmee is probably my least favorite character too for that reason. Why should I care about this new character? I wanted the stories of the characters I already knew to be resolved. Do vampires have souls or not? Who is Embry’s father? What is Leah going to do with her life? Is Jasper ever going to master self-control? Those are the things I wanted to see tied up in Breaking Dawn.

The whole plot with Renesmee just didn’t make a lot of sense to me. The idea that in 3000 years the Volturi never knew this was possible, even though myths exist about it just really ~bothers me. I find it hard to suspend my disbelief for that. And then the Volturi just shrugging it off and going home, like “Well since she’s not TECHNICALLY a vampire and your canine compatriots are not TECHNICALLY werewolves, that’s fine.” The Quileute wolves are still capable of killing vampires and see it as their mission to do so… and the Volturi are OKAY with that? Really? They don’t care that Charlie knows basically everything as long as they don’t use the exact word ‘vampire?’ I get that Aro’s afraid of Bella’s shield making it an even fight, but I find it hard to believe that they’re willing to let this all slide on such technicalities. IF SM wasn’t ready to deliver on her promises of a huge battle and the fearsome, ruthless, no-second-chances Volturi, she shouldn’t have involved them at all, IMO.

Do you think Breaking Dawn would have been a better book if Bella lost all her human memories, didn't remember Edward or the Cullens, didn't have easy control of her blood thirst and if Jacob never imprinted on Renesmee which meant full out battle against the Cullens and an actual battle against the Volturi?

I would have liked any of those endings better, definitely! Really Bella just not having instant control of her bloodlust would have made everything a lot more interesting to me. What was the point of all the angst and worry and “no Bella you don’t know the consequences of this choice you’re making!” stuff if it was just going to be fine and easy? I have no real problem with Bella becoming a vampire, but I wanted to see her BE A VAMPIRE, not be a doting mom to her half-human baby with a beating heart and have NO drama, or a devoted daughter to her human dad with NO problem. I mean what’s the point of her being a vampire if there’s no drama? The drama is suddenly all about the Volturi when the main thrust of the series had been “no Bella you can’t become a vampire because reasons!”

I wanted a snarly newborn Bella that Edward and Emmett would have to hold back from eating Charlie or something. That would have been cool and perfectly demonstrated the consequences.

Even though I read the book years ago I'm still incredibly pissed about the name Bella Swan decided to bestow upon her baby

Well, I was spoiled before I went in, but since Carlisle is my favorite character and pretty much the only reason I read the books past the first one and one of the few reasons I watched the movies, it still hit me pretty hard. I’m more emotionally invested in that character than any of the others (and, no, not in an ‘omg he’s so hot’ way) so the fact he’s the first to die is almost like, LOL WELL OF COURSE. D:

But I kinda … liked it? Not liked it but seeing everyone flip out about made me happy. It’s like, okay, finally people appreciate Carlisle. Too bad he had to die for people to realize it. lol. And I like that it was Aro who killed him. It sort of had to be Aro. As much as Aro loves him, Carlisle’s a huge threat to him now because of all these genuine FRIENDS he has. Aro has this huge army that are loyal to him because of Chelsea; Carlisle ‘army’ are loyal out of real friendship. That’s dangerous. So Aro has to kill him, even though he loves him. Just like he ‘had’ to kill his sister Didyme.

Seth, Leah and Marcus’ death also really moved me. For whatever reason I’m just not that attached to Jasper. In the books I found him sort of distant and a little scary so I never got emotionally attached, but Alice’s reaction was hard to watch.

My reaction was mostly THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE BOOK. Like, look, I love Carlisle, he’s my favorite, but he’s the mentor character and they usually die. I was sort of prepared for that/expecting it when I read BD. I was prepared for a bunch of characters to die, and then none of them did except Irina who we didn’t even properly meet until about 2 minutes before her death. I think the vision fight is the better ending, as hard as it is to let our favorites go and watch them die. It’s an ending filled with loss and sacrifice and consequences and brutal resolution rather than the non-fight that doesn’t resolve anything.

tl;dr: I knew it wasn’t real before I saw it, but I kind of wished it was. It was a much more exciting and emotional ending than the real one.

As I was searching through the Carlisle and Esme tag (original OTP(^0^) ) I saw that you have a lot of good theories and opinions, so I have a question: I know from experience that it is very common for people who have suffered abuse to have problems with anxiety or PTSD for the rest of their lives. Since Esme's life consists of, well, forever, do you think she would still have those problems after so many years with Carlisle? Or at all?

I think probably in the first couple of years, yes. But since it’s canon that human memories fade, I think as her memories of her abuse faded (I don’t get the sense she was trying to hold on to it in the same was Rosalie did), it would lessen to the point that in the present day I don’t think it would be too much of an issue.

But in her early years with Carlisle and Edward I bet there were times she was triggered in a PTSD sort of way. I could imagine Edward raising his voice in frustration, or Carlisle reaching to touch her hair and Esme misinterpreting it as a strike or slap and backing away in fear. I sort of wonder if her initial slip-ups as a newborn had something to do with Carlisle and Edward being reluctant to be too rough with her—as they would need to be to restrain a newborn who was stronger than them—lest they upset her or trigger her.

I think in the present day though most of that has faded along with her human memories. I think she’s more likely to be ‘triggered’ by the memory of her son—something she WOULD try to hold on to, IMO—than Charles and the abuse, which is something I think she happily let go. Carlisle was always her ideal guy anyway, so why dwell on the bad relationship when your dream relationship came true? She doesn’t hold a grudge the same way Rosalie does, IMO. The fact that Charles was still alive for Edward to kill in 1927 is proof of that to me.
