It’s really quite sad. They could have turned out so differently if they had been allowed to grow up as humans, or if they had been rescued by another vampire. The Guide implies that Caius’ sadism sort of rubbed off on Jane. Perhaps it wasn’t something that was inherent in her from the start.
I think Aro does love them in his way, but Aro loved his sister as well and still saw her as a tool and an obstacle. He saved them, he dotes on them, he loves them. But they are weapons in his arsenal and jewels in his crown. He shaped them and ‘condemned’ them to this life for better or worse. It’s tragic. Who knows who these two could have grown up to be and how their remarkable gifts may have manifested without their burning focusing them in such a negative way.
I think it’s pretty cool Alec has such a following, considering how little we actually see of him in the books. Say what you want about Twilight, but the fact that so many of the minor characters have inspired such a following is pretty impressive.
(and yes, Alec and Jane are pretty fascinating and even sort of tragic figures in a way…)
In the movie it was more an announcement than a invitation, I guess, but in the book I thought it was an invite? That Alice saw things would be better if she just sent them one so she did.
I wish they had shown up though. Aro would LOVE weddings. “Oh let me dance with the bride!! and the mother of the groom! And the mother of the bride!!! Oh, Mrs. Dwyer, you do smell lovely. Renee is such a charming name, French you know, meaning ‘reborn.’ Would you like to be ‘reborn?’ Perhaps you will be gifted as your daughter surely is!”
Meanwhile Marcus is sitting there trying to think of different ways to kill himself (“Could I drown in the punch bowl? No… don’t need to breathe. Damn it.”) and Caius is growling about Bella not being a vampire yet. Jane pains people so she can be the one to catch the bouquet. Jessica is all over Demetri and Felix.
I think Alec and Jane are verrrrry close. Creepily close. I think Jane is Alec’s #1 priority and for Jane it’s a tie between Alec and Aro. I don’t think Alec is as concerned with Aro’s approval as his sister is, although I’m sure he appreciates it, I think Jane is the more eager to please of the two. I also think she has more of a temper and Alec has to keep her in line from time to time. I see Aro as sort of a father figure to them (in a similar way that Carlisle is to the Cullens—after all, Aro DID do what Carlisle did: he saved these kids’ lives. Granted it wasn’t out of compassion but a desire for their powers, but still. From Jane and Alec’s POV, this man saved them. They owe him everything), but I don’t think they are particularly close to anyone else.
I think the rest of the guard fears them and those who have been there longer resent them for being so beloved and powerful. I mean Jane and Alec came along in 800 AD according to the guide, and sort of became the big power players. Anyone who came before is pushed into the sidelines. Daniel Cudmore, who plays Felix, mentions this in some of the BD 2 special features, that he and Demetri don’t really like Jane and Alec because before them, they were sort of the most important guards and then these two creepy kids come along and take their place. Two creepy kids with incredible powers that can lay the most experienced fighters low. Jane and Alec’s names inspire fear in any vampire who hears them; even the rest of their covenmates.
If it’s not an imprint, I could maybe see it.
I just happen to be of the opinion a werewolf couldn’t imprint on a vampire (I still don’t think Jacob imprinting on a half-vampire makes sense, but at least she’s partially human). I mean if it’s about continuing the species, imprinting on a female vampire makes no sense at all since they cannot have children.
And I DO NOT think imprinting is a “better” love than falling in love the normal way. Leah and Sam was real. It wouldn’t have hurt them both so much if it hadn’t been a real love.
If anyone could unthaw someone like Jane it would be have to be someone as warm and friendly (and accepting) as Seth. He’d be the only one to be able to see past the whole vampire thing and maybe see the girl beneath. And it has to be hard to resist Seth, even for someone like Jane. Of course no one in the pack would like it, but Aro might encourage it for the wrong reasons (because he’d love to have some guard dogs).
Basically I don’t know how compatible it is or if it would last, but it could be an interesting fling for sure!
I really loved the little touches with the Volturi. How Aro sort of kept Alec in check (with the delicate “that’s enough, son” sort of hand gestures) and how Alec reined in Jane. I’ve always sort of assumed that Jane was the more impulsive and hot-headed of the two and Alec was a bit more sensible and stable and was the one to keep his sister under control when she was about to lose her temper, so that was a cool moment for me because it so perfectly fit my headcanon. lol.
